Julien Clerc - Utile

Julien Clerc - Utile
French chanson | MP3 | 1992 | 192 kbps | 52,2 mb | covers

"Utile est un album riche musicalement, et très humain et généreux dans ses paroles et dans ses thèmes. Julien Clerc a su y mettre une variété de mélodies qui ne lasse pas. Je pense que c'est typiquement le genre d'album qui peut faire l'unanimité. Mon titre préféré, Noe, est un clin d'oeil très sympathique.

Ella Fitzgerald: The Royal Roost Sessions 1948-49
Jazz | MP3 | 320 kbps | 144 MB

These rare sessions capture Ella at the transition point between her previous professional incarnation as teen swing ingenue and her new incarnation as First Lady of American Popular Song and jazz virtuosa extraordinaire. The famous "Lady Be Good" comes from this period and we can see the extent to which Ella was embracing bebop and the expanded improvisational opportunities it provided all performers in jazz who were up to it's demands.

Leo Kottke - 6 and 12 String Guitar

Leo Kottke "6 and 12 String Guitar"
MP3 | 128 kbps | 38 MB
MP3 | 320 kbps | 89 MB1
1969 | Genre: Folk

The quintessential fingerpicking album

For decades, Leo Kottke would inspire generations of fingerpicking acoustic guitarists (and help pave the way for New Age and contemporary instrumental music), but this 1969 album is the one that started it all. Kottke's brilliant debut was released, fittingly, on John Fahey's Takoma label. Showing the influence of Fahey himself (and Takoma labelmate Robbie Basho), Kottke performs impossibly difficult solo compositions that meld blues, bluegrass, and jazz techniques. Whether surefooted and quick ("The Driving of the Year Nail," "Jack Fig," "The Fisherman") or slow and reflective ("Ojo," "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring"), Kottke's instrumental work is simply awe-inspiring. He'd forge an entire career out of this music and eventually incorporate singing onto his albums, but this gem is Kottke at his very best. Essential.

PS: avoid frustration... don't try this at home.

Maurane - L'un pour l'autre
French | Jazz-Blues | 1998 | MP3 | 320 kbps | 176 mb

This is a collection of Maurane singles, well balanced between her ballads and her more upbeat, full of energy songs. It covers her early recordings influenced by Jazz, some upbeat and humourous ("Danser", "Toutes les mamas", "Pas gaie la pagaille", "Du mal"), others being ballads showing a more sensitive side and a powerfull voice ("ça casse", "Tout pour un seul homme", "Sur un prélude de Bach" - that one being, for real, based on a classical Bach piece) - or how to teach some of today's young divas that singing does not mean screaming, even if you have the lungs for it. You will also get her collaboration to "Emilie Jolie" children fairy tale ("La chanson de l'autruche"), a very funny song with strong jazz influences. She once was part of the French musical "Starmania" (she sang the bartender) as "Les uns contre les autres" witnesses. The song has become a French classic, but this is one of its best rendition. "Tant c'était bon" is a duet with another belgian singer (Philippe Lafontaine - another guy to be checked out) worth a listen. Between light bossa-nova and jazz, it is a great pop music piece. I would also like to point out "Alfonsina y el mar", a delicate composition in spanish, and "C'est la vie qui décide" an emotional, painfull song about losing the childish illusion you can change the world as you grow up. The title track "L'un pour l'autre" shows the more world music oriented turn she has taken recently on her latest release "Toi du monde". She has a place of her own on the French music scene, take a listen. You will not regret it.

RAMONES - Ramones Mania (1988)

All the classics one would expect are present and accounted for, including "Rockaway Beach", "Beat on the Brat", and "Teenage Lobotomy". Also included are such well-chosen tunes as "Commando", "Bonzo Goes to Bitburg", and the Dee Dee/Johnny Thunders/Jerry Nolan/Richard Hell ode to dope "Chinese Rocks". Of interest to Ramones completists is the hard-to-find B-side "Indian Giver", a bubblegum hit in its own right, and a song so good that a lesser band would have made it an A-side. As either an introduction or a single-disc career overview, RAMONES MANIA is indispensable.

OST | 72MB | ZIP | RS MP3 | 192kbps

The Cure and a reggae beat certainly make strange bedfellows as, one assumes, do Adam Sandler and a girl with no short-term memory. In that sense, the 50 First Dates soundtrack is a good accompaniment to a fluffy romantic comedy in which one of the main characters is perpetually living in the past. It's also a fitting follow-up to that other Sandler/Barrymore vehicle, The Wedding Singer. (Take a set by Robbie Hart, add a topical shirt, and voilá: a new soundtrack is born.) To those who can't get enough of '80s hits like Bryan Ferry's "Slave to Love" and the Cars' "Drive," setting them to a island beat will likely seem whimsical, charming, and perfect for barbecue weather. For those who are glad the '80s are gone, this CD is a pass. And for Sandler-completeists who crave lighthearted, comic tunes like "Forgetful Lucy," well, you obviously own this already. --

Liquid Soul - Make Some Noise
Acid Jazz | MP3 | 192 Kbps | 82 MB | RS

Liquid Soul is a brass-driven, acid-jazz band from Chicago, whose funky live performances are electrically charged. Their inventive melodies snake around a wide assortment of free-flowing loops, rhythms and beats. Headed by the impressive sax-playing of Mars Williams, whose background was in new wave, the fierce outfit also boasts another interesting personality--Simone, the daughter of Nina Simone.

The ROLLING STONES - Their satanic majesties request
RIP+UP | MP3 | format ape | All Covers & Sticker | CD Audio 1967/Reedit 1986 | DECCA Records | 242 Mb

As all Sixties music fans will know, the Rollings Stones' album Their Satanic Majesties Request was their psychedelic answer to The Beatles' Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band album. On the Sgt. Peppers album cover, their is a Shirley Temple doll (far right) wearing a shirt that has the words on it, "Welcome The Rolling Stones." As a friendly payback tribute, The Stones hid the faces of the four Beatles in the 3-D photo on the Satanic Majesties album cover. George Harrison's face is the easiest to spot. It's below Charlie Watt's arm (far right). John Lennon's face is just above the camel figure's hump (lower right foreground). Paul McCartney and Ringo are much harder to see, due to the blurred effect of the 3-D photo. Paul's face is to the left (the viewer's left) of Charlie Watt's right arm. Paul's face is tilted to the left and well hidden in the yellow-white flowers. Ringo's face is on the far right side of the photo. Their is a large red flower with a yellow center that looks like a large eye covering Bill Wyman's left arm. Ringo's face is just right of the flower, blending with the red flowers around his face.
If you don't have the vinyl album, you'll have to use the cd cover, but you'll only find George and John. The photo used for the cd was cropped, so Paul's and Ringo's faces were cut off. Have fun hunting.

Besides Per Gessle (of Roxette) having his solo career, in his after-school times he was involved in the Swedish band Gyllene Tider (started in 1976) for which he was writing the songs and doing vocals. The band was releasing albums and singles from time to time. In 1994 the band went on a very sucessful Swedish tour and release a collection of hits CD and Digipack format. All of the songs are in Swedish. It might be a good listening for the Roxette fans or people who just like Roxette.

Susanne Abbuehl (2006) «Compass»
FLAC | Mode: 8, Best Compression | 53:32 Min | 259 Mb
Styles: Jazz, Vocal Jazz, Folksongs, Continental Jazz, Avant-Garde Jazz

Susanne Abbuehl startled listeners in 2001 with her debut release, April, in which she took on the poems of e.e. cummings, and created lyrics for a Carla Bley composition. A studied and original vocalist - she worked with Jeanne Lee - she is also a solid composer. Her aesthetic and restrained approach lend themselves easily to Manfred Eicher's production M.O. On Compass, Abbuehl and her band, which features the wonderful clarinetist Christoph May, dig deep into the words of James Joyce, William Carlos Williams, and the music of Sun Ra and Chick Corea. The project is once more refined and mannered yet utterly ambitious beginning with her original composition "Bathyal." Here May's bass clarinet introduces Wolfert Brederode's piano that is given dimension by drummer Lucas Niggli's brushed cymbal and snare work. Abbuehl's voice enters not as whisper but as soft yet full-throated, "Do not run just yet/Do not hide..." ushering in a call to wait and observe, to look around and be touched by the bloom of flowers, by the environs as a balm for a fallen heart. The rippling piano sends waves just above the lyric, and offers the listener a way in. On "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair," (a daring chance in a jazz setting after Patty Waters '60s recording broke all the rules), is not so much referential as reverential. She bases her read of John Jacob Niles' tune on Luciano Berio's folk song arrangement. It's nearly pastoral, but May's clarinet adds an eerie dimension, making it one of the most beautifully articulated versions on record. (She also translates another of Berio's folk songs gorgeously in the French traditional song "La Foliare.") Abbuehl's musical composition to accompany a section from James Joyce's Finnegan's Wake is a slightly angular, with hand percussion accompanying the piano and bass clarinet. Likewise her composition for William Carlos Williams' poem Primrose is skeletal, slightly quirky and off kilter and fits Williams' taut poem like a leather glove. But it is in her own lyrics set to the music of Ra's "A Call for Demons," that the other side of her particular brilliance shines so brightly: taking Ra's suspended spatial approach, she economically creates a "call" to the forces of light and darkness that is seductive and bluesy, almost like a torch song, a lover's call. As May's clarinet whimsically touches the melody of Corea's "Children's Song No. 1," accompanied by shakers used ever so tautly and sparely, the piano enters and provides a harmonic backdrop for Abbuehl, Her singsong vocal embraces the whimsy but creates a new space for reverie and nostalgia that is not sophomoric but romantic and urban. Compass is a record of dreams and visions, shared sparely yet frankly with images and tensions subtly revealed, opening song into a netherworld that encompasses the balance of all things. It goes further than April, is more confident and assured, and Abbuehl's compositions and lyrics are the place of entrance and quiet revelation. ~ Review by Thom Jurek ~

"Although it wasn't released until 1993, AHEAD OF THEIR TIME is a live Zappa/Mothers of Invention recording taped on October 28, 1968, at the Royal Festival Hall in London. It was the final date of a lengthy European tour, and Zappa was asked to pick an opening act to warm up this particular show. Throughout the tour, Frank had been composing chamber music pieces in his free time in hotels and airports. So instead of hiring a band to open the show, Frank decided to use this time to his advantage.

He hired members of the BBC Symphony to perform these pieces, while having Mothers members Ian Underwood, Bunk Gardner, and Arthur Dyer Tripp III act out a play over the music. Zappa realized he could record the performance, and possibly release it as his next album. For whatever reason, he was not happy with the results at the time, and the tapes of the show sat in a vault for years. Listening today, the performance is comparable to his subsequent play, 1971's UNCLE MEAT, since it's a combination of rock ("Let's Make the Water Turn Black," "Transylvania Boogie"), orchestra ("Prologue"), and theater ("Progress?").

Taj Mahal - Music Fuh Ya' (Musica Para Tu) [1977]
Blues | mp3 256kbps | 41:56 | rar 80 Mb | covers |

"Though an expectedly eclectic mix of blues, calypso, Caribbean music, and bits of reggae, disco, and other pop forms, Music Fuh Ya (Musica Para Tu) was not one of Mahal's more inspired outings. No one could criticize Mahal for lack of ambition in his efforts to integrate more styles into the folk-blues blend at the core of his music. But the surfeit of instrumentation, particularly the steel drums, were sometimes distractions more than enhancements, resulting in a forced, slick party atmosphere to cuts like "You Got It." Something like a cover of the blues-folk classic "Freight Train" plays much more to Mahal's strengths, but the trimmings of jazzy sax and steel drums aren't necessary when Taj alone could do a more convincing version. On "Baby, You're My Destiny," he gets more into the ingratiating Leon Redbone old-time/ragtime mood, and "The Four Mills Brothers," a nod to old jazz-pop vocal bands, works better than most cuts. He uses reggae (on "Honey Babe") and disco (on "Curry") rhythms to lesser effect, though.
