These rare sessions capture Ella at the transition point between her previous professional incarnation as teen swing ingenue and her new incarnation as First Lady of American Popular Song and jazz virtuosa extraordinaire. The famous "Lady Be Good" comes from this period and we can see the extent to which Ella was embracing bebop and the expanded improvisational opportunities it provided all performers in jazz who were up to it's demands.
