Called by some kawkab al-sharq (star of the East) and by others 'empress of Arab tunes,' Umm Kalthum, with a voice powerful and clear, can still be heard daily on radio stations in the multitudes of coffee shops and taxis all over the Arab world. Even though she died over three decades ago, her love lyrics, national odes and religious chants continue to affect millions of people. Her audience, as if on cue, hums along or cries in despair in reaction to her range of pitch, filled with nostalgia and yearning, touching the very Arab soul.

Labeled "indisputably the Arab world's greatest singer" by World Music: The Rough Guide, Egyptian singer Umm Kalthum (alternately spelled Kalthoum or Kalsoum) is regarded as a treasure of Middle Eastern culture. In a career that lasted more than 50 years she became known as "the voice and face of Egypt" with a voice powerful enough to shatter glass but that was used more often to capture the emotional depth of the poems she set to music. Her importance to Egyptian music in particular and Middle Eastern music in general prompted her biographer, Virginia Danielson, to write on the All Music Guide website: "Imagine a singer with the virtuosity of Joan Sutherland or Ella Fitzgerald, the public persona of Eleanor Roosevelt and the audience of Elvis and you have Umm Kulthum, the most accomplished singer of her century in the Arab world."

Umm Kulthum (Arabic: ?? ?????; Umm Kultum, also spelled Om Koultoum, Om Kalthoum, mmü Gülsüm, Oum Kalsoum, Oum Kalthum, Omm Kolsoum, Umm Kolthoum, Um Kalthoom, and Omme Kolsoum, born ????? ??????? ????????, Fatima Ibrahim al-Baltagi) (December 31, 1904-February 3, 1975) in Al Senbellawein. Egyptian singer, songwriter, and an actress. She is known as "the Star of the East". More than three decades after her death, she is still recognized as the Arab world's most famous and distinguished singer of the 20th century.

In his continuing evolution from pompadoured rockabilly revivalist to zoot-suited hipster, Brian Setzer keeps the faith with THE DIRTY BOOGIE, a collection that swings from stem to bow. Backed by hot horns and a bopping rhythm section, Setzer mixes well-arranged originals with well-known covers that show an aficionado's appreciation of jump blues, swing and doo-wop. Tunes by the Skyliners ("Since I Don't Have You"), Santo & Johnny ("Sleepwalk"), Bobby Darin ("As Long As I'm Singin'") and Bullmoose Jackson ("Nosey Joe") all enjoy the combination of Setzer's wide-ranging guitar playing and excellent charts played by his crack orchestra. Elsewhere, Gwen Stefani is LaVerne Baker to Setzer's Jimmy Ricks in a playful reading of "You're The Boss". Clint Stacey's "This Old House" gives Setzer a chance to show off some fancy country finger-picking. For decades, there were only three complete collections of Dvorák's symphonies: this one; Rowicki's with the same orchestra; and Kubelik's with the Berlin Philharmonic. Kertész offers the most rustic, gutsy interpretations of all. Famous for his dislike of rehearsals, he allows the London Symphony to make a much rougher sound than his colleagues tolerate, and though not the last word in polish, the results have a spontaneous charm that's pretty hard to resist. More to the point, Dvorák's early symphonies (Nos. 1 to 5) remain sadly neglected, and each one of them is full of gorgeous tunes cloaked in mellifluous orchestration. -- David Hurwitz (Amazon)

Features stunning performances by Steve Walsh & the legendary Steve Morse. Tracks include 'Dust In The Wind', 'Point Of No Return' & 'Carry On Wayward Son' and more. Recorded on Fe b 14, 1989 at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia, Pa. 1999 release.

This is a good live album let down by one crucial fact - Steve Walsh's once golden vocals have deteriorated badly, so much so that he can't even hit the notes in his own songs any more. And this really detracts from what is a decent live album and one much better than the album the concert was meant to promote - In The Spirit Of Things (see my review on this site).

As it stands the album is far superior to the awful Live At The Whisky and features an overall performance far in excess of that.

If you want to hear what Walsh and Kansas were once capable of spend your money on the truly incredible Two For The Show - which I called the best live album of all time in my review on this site.

Unlike Live At The Whisky this album is worth your money and it contains decent live versions of some of the only good songs from In The Spirit Of Things.

One of Philip Glass' great achievements aside from his role as a minimalist pioneer has been his successful effort to establish the composer and associated ensemble as a viable musico-economic model. For many years performances of his music usually involved his Philip Glass Ensemble, but this profusion of recordings of his music by independent ensembles is a strong sign of the durability of his reputation. Alter Ego, a group from Italy, here performs a group of early Glass works and generally tries to evoke the heady days when minimalism first came on the scene in New York. Not surprisingly, this music was performed in New York and enthusiastically received; Alter Ego replicated the performance in Rome in 1999 with similarly successful results. Most of the music here illustrates a specific aspect of Glass' musical thinking rather than a synthetic realization of his ideas, and as such it will be of the most interest to listeners already fascinated by the composer. Plays Live is the first live and fifth album overall released by British rock musician Peter Gabriel. This album was originally released as a double album and longplay cassette, with sixteen songs and a running time of over 80 minutes. It was eventually reissued in as a double CD. When the Gabriel catalog was remastered and released in 2002, a single CD version "Plays Live - Highlights" with only twelve songs and some significant track time alterations was released in the US while the full double-CD set, containing all the songs, was released in the UK.

The one original song-"I Go Swimming"-received airplay and made the US charts in 1983.

The "totally live" appellation is a bit of a reach (translation: there are obvious after-the-fact overdubs), but nevertheless this is a pretty faithful representation of what a good mid-'60s rock & roll club band sounded like. Rivers was (and remains) a flexible, expressive singer, equally at home covering R&B, rockabilly, country, and the Beatles, and as a guitarist, while no virtuoso, he was occasionally capable of the sort of stinging, bluesman's attack associated with original '60s axe heroes like Lonnie Mack (as on the hit version here of Chuck Berry's "Memphis"). In retrospect, this is all a bit shagadelic, but it's fun nonetheless.

The second installment in ABKCO's series of box sets containing CD replicas of the Rolling Stones' singles and EPs, Singles 1965-1967 covers the classic period between "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and "In Another Land," the time when the Stones started to reach beyond their hard blues base, and created some of their most indelible music. Like the previous box, Singles 1963-1965, each of the group's British and American singles and EPs are represented, reproduced in paper sleeves and pressed on all-black CDs designed to look like a 45. Where that set had some rarities - including the first release of such classic EPs as The Rolling Stones, 5 X 5, and Got Live If You Want It! - every cut on this box has been on CD before (all showed up on the triple-disc The Singles Collection: The London Years) and there is a slight tweaking of history here, with certain singles (like "Satisfaction," "Get Off of My Cloud," and "Paint It, Black") containing both the American and British B-sides. This may upset some purists, but it's a clever, efficient way to cover this ground; plus, even with the added song these discs run well under ten minutes, so it's a nice bonus that beefs up the discs slightly and makes them more listenable. Of course, this isn't designed for listenability in the first place, since changing the 11 discs is cumbersome, even with a multi-disc player - it's really a set to look at and admire, to gaze at each of the picture sleeves. But, if they're listened to a disc at a time, it does reveal what a splendid singles band the Rolling Stones were. There has never been a single as snide and cynical as "Satisfaction" backed by "The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man," while there has never been one as nasty and antisocial as "Paint It, Black" b/w "Stupid Girl," and their rebel reputation was cemented by "Get Off of My Cloud" b/w "I'm Free." These are revelations that this set makes clear through its singles replicas, and it helps make this set a necessary purchase for the hardcore.

This is a glorious debut recital by a tenor, from whom, if he sings the right roles and keeps way from jet-setting and too much singing, might just be the lyrico-spinto tenor we've been waiting for. He has the class of Carlo Bergonzi and a ringing tone which is somewhere between Domingo's big, dark sound and Pavarotti's brightness; he sings with a true mezza voce (not a falsetto); he always obeys the composer's markings and delineates character. He seems incapable of vulgarity, refusing to gulp or sob when a musically expressive gesture will do. The opening aria here--from L'Arlesiana--is so beautifully, touchingly sung that it's a heartbreaker; he doesn't take the usually opted-for high note near the end, but never fear: in the Traviata and Bohème excerpts, Villazon offers big, whopping high Cs. This CD is a knockout; let's hope it's only the beginning of an illustrious career, both recorded and live. -- Robert Levin
