After years of being in danger of becoming something of an eccentric rock & roll hermit, ex-Fleetwood Mac main man Peter Green began to enjoy a remarkable resurgence in the late 1990s. He achieved this by adopting the music that first inspired him--the blues. As with 1998's "Robert Johnson Songbook" album, Hot Foot Powder once again finds Green and his musical partner Nigel Watson looking to the original bluesman for inspiration. Despite an impressive guest list, the tendency to indulge in musical backslapping is very much resisted with the results that the songs, presented largely in an acoustic based form, are allowed to shine. Not that those guests don't make key contributions--Dr John adds glorious piano to "From Four To Late", whilst the trio of Buddy Guy, Joe Louis Walker and Otis Rush all bring suitable Chicago credibility to the project. Pick of the lot has to be the marvellous Honey Boy Edwards, who actually played alongside Johnson and is a blues bustin' 84 years old. Rock on. Green himself is in fine form, anchoring the whole thing with some beautiful slide guitar and gravely vocals, keeping the feel of the originals while injecting something new. And he probably didn't have to sell his soul t othe devil to do it.
