These 1977-78 recordings are Karajan's best Brahms--better than his somewhat mannered digital set. The Berlin Philharmonic, as ever, is amazingly smooth and accomplished, playing with great class without losing any power--as an example, just listen to the finale of the second symphony. DG's engineers have turned this always-good recording into something truly magnificent to hear, and, at the price, this is a sure bet.

Not a note is missed; the direction of Christian Zacharias is very good, the interpretations of the vocalists are very much in keeping with what one would expect. The orchestra plays brilliantly and flawlessly. This is Haydn as he himself would have intended. There is not a single moment where this recording fails to deliver these baroque masterpieces in all of their refined glory. Each work would be considered a masterwork if they had been written by his more famous sibling, thus exposed to a broader audience.

The Requiem, presented first on this recording, is the work of Michael Haydn as a younger man. In it he quotes from the plainchant that these works were intended to supplant in worship. However, this is not a criticism in any way, as the practice of the day was to do exactly that in order to not jar the listener too much. The resulting work is remarkable in any case, and the modern listener would never think to criticize Haydn either for the broad melodic quoting or for the brilliant liberties taken. It begins as a dark piece, brooding for its time, with intelligent and moving use of brass and strings. Throughout the work, the chorus is used brilliantly and the soloists are utilized perfectly. One must be impressed at the early maturity of this man, and at the brilliance of this work.

As Haydn matured, he was hired to work for the same Salzburg courts that employed Mozart to be their concertmaster. The latter two works are from this era of his life, when he was devoting himself to instrumental music. They are both fine examples of pre-Beethoven symphonies. Indeed, both works can be considered remarkable in some places for their uncommonly expressive use of trumpet ensemble and timpani.

This is a recording well worth exploring, as the material is delightful and inspired, feels comfortingly familiar, and yet is generally unknown. This is exactly the type of rediscovered gem that the true lover of classical music will find remarkable. It is a great injustice that so fine a composer as Michael Haydn would be so forgotten, especially in light of the continued recognition of his brother. One can hope that he will here be rediscovered by the modern listener. Certainly the modern listener will find the exploration rewarding. Patrick Gary

The Symphony No. 3, S. 3 (K. 1A3), The Camp Meeting by Charles Ives (1874 - 1954) was written between the years of 1908 and 1910. In 1947, Ives was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his Symphony No. 3. Later, his works were performed by conductors like Leonard Bernstein. Ives is reported to have given half the money to Lou Harrison, who conducted the premiere.
Structure

The symphony is in three movements:

1. Old Folks Gatherin' - Andante maestoso
2. Children's Day - Allegro
3. Communion - Largo

This symphony is notable for usage of a chamber orchestra, rather than a full-blown orchestra Ives used for his other symphonies. The symphony is also very short, only lasting approximately fifteen minutes.

Instrumentation

The symphony is scored for a chamber orchesta of a flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, two horns, trombone, bells, and strings (violins, violas, cellos, and double basses).

Composition

The symphony is influenced by including War songs, dances, and general European classical music. It evokes country meetings during his childhood, when people gathered in fields to sing, preach, and listen. There is nothing bad about this CD. However, that is not much that is exceptionally good. The majority of the disc is fairly standard progressive metal. It is done quite well, but just does not rise above the level of the rest of the pack. There are a couple of shining exceptions to this, one of them being a killer piano-based ballad, but the majority of the album is a bit boring in its lack of uniqueness.

Andrew Manze, following a suggestion in one of Tartini's letters, gets rid of the published accompaniment and plays these pieces on the solo violin. In the other three works he takes plenty of liberties, but in the famous Devil's Trill Sonata he embellishes, improvises, departs from the text and comes back again. The verbal description sounds like my idea of a nightmare, but the execution is so inspired that this is one of the most compelling Baroque performances ever. Whether it is "authentic" or not, I have no idea, and Manze probably doesn't either. But this is a recording you will remember. --Leslie Gerber

Cecilia Bartoli - Live in Italy

In the beginning, Cecilia Bartoli seemed to do one thing better than anybody, i.e., Rossini arias, which would not guarantee a long career even for a singer of her ebullience. This live performance from the Teatro Olympico in Vincenza, Italy, shows how much she's expanded, both linguistically and musically. The first five selections reflect her newfound specialty, early opera. The three Caccini selections from the 17th century--accompanied by small string ensemble--are deeply felt and stylistically convincing enough to make one eager for future forays. She's guilty of spinning out Handel's "Lascia la spina" excessively but hits new heights of virtuosity in Vivaldi's "Agitata da due venti." The rest of the disc is for voice and piano, in a program including both some genuine discoveries by French composer Pauline Viardot-Garcia that reveal the singer's increasing emotional depths and less consequential ones by Donizetti and Rossini. Bartoli also sings Spanish songs, most notably Montsalvatge's "Canto negro," proving that the singer doesn't venture into a new language until she can truly feel in it. Remarkably, her voice maintains its strength and body in the deeper, mezzo-ish regions as well as in the high, soprano-range areas. Might she have two voices?

Having released the internationally celebrated Gulag Orkestar in May of 2006, Zach Condon and cohorts came back with this taster, thematically and stylistically, for their second long player The Flying Club Cup. As impressive as the preceding LP, the song Elephant Gun is a classic in itself. We are not worthy.

"Elephant Gun" is totally terrific, and at a time where Beirut hype is already cliche, when backlash is heatin' up the manifestos, it's a reminder of just why Zach was exciting us in the first place. This isn't so much gypsy music so much as music to make us sedentary indie rock kids feel like tumbleweeds; to make us feel like we're shaking dust off our jackets, and into our shoes; to make us feel like yeah we're on our way somewhere, you and i; just take my hand.

The song takes the usual form: ukelele and Condon's wobbling, sugar-and-butter voice; then accordion, straight up-and-down; then the smash of a cymbal and thumb of a bass-drum; then the whole lot of them, squeezed into the pen. Horns and violin, and just as we might tire, Condon is singing with himself, slopes on top of slopes, the sunrises folding over each-other like so many watercolours. "Let the seasons begin / take the big gun down!" We hear no gunshots - just the lumber of our big, slow hearts.

The intimate interplay found on 1984's Telephone (as in two-way conversation), is nothing short of remarkable. The setup is between two front line instrumentalists who are both rhythmnatists in their own right. Hall is a consummate rhythm guitarist and he gets a chance to display it on tunes such as "Indian Summer," and "Two's Blues." Carter, who is known for his unwavering rhythmic commitment, is deft as a lead man in such an intimate setting. Check out his solo on "Alone Together." Hall, however, is the greatest surprise. Despite the fact that this is, as one would expect, a fairly laid -back date, his intricacy of attack and his lofty, harmonic scalar heights are simply astonishing. In his solo ascent on Carter's "Telephone," he goes inside the rhythm and harmony of the tune and exchanges them interval by interval. These are indispensable guitar and bass duets by two masters of intimate musical discourse.

The third live CD featuring bassist Ron Carter and guitarist Jim Hall in a duo setting is yet another gem. This 1984 concert, taped at the Concord Jazz Festival, kicks off with Carter's lively blues "Telephone," which gives the pair an opportunity to tightrope walk in unison on the song's tricky theme as well as show off their individual chops as soloists. Hall's "Chorale and Dance" is a two- part composition that begins in a very formal, semi-classical vein before segueing into a Latin setting. They tackle the standard "Alone Together" at a faster clip than their first release together, yet maintain its intimacy. Hall's "Two's Blues" is another daredevil performance. In spite of the virtuoso talent of both men, it is incredible how they achieve so much with so little volume; this release is highly recommended, as are their two previous duo recordings. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

It's nice to see the spirit of funk is still alive and well with the lovers of classic dancefloor tracks. Vintage Grooves very much seems to be in the spirit of this similar to the fantastic Mastercuts selections that gripped everyone in the 90's. There are some absolute classic tracks here and what's clear is that 'Funk Volume 1' has certainly captured the ultimate essence of funk music with the bassline attitude that made funk so damn dirty. The album starts off 'The Beginning Of The End' by Funky Nassau an awesome funk track and then into 'Pick Up The Pieces' by The Average White Band that was one of the first funk tracks that attracted me to this style of music. The list of great artists on this collection is first class like Sly & The Family Stone, Bill Withers, The O Jay's, The Fatback Band, Curtis Mayfield, Earth Wind & Fire and The Isley Brothers. We see the Headhunters with 'God Made Me Funky' at there most funkiest and lesser known gems like Raydio 'For Those That Like To Groove' and an awesome Bar Kays track 'Holy Ghost' that slaps you in your face.

After their Entropia debut came the smashing album One Hour By The Concrete Lake which immediately put the band on the prog metal map. Obviously the band knew their follow-up album had to be even better because now the entire international media would be highly interested. After listening to The Perfect Element I'm convinced they will!

Opening track "Used" kicks off in a very heavy way, yet the band knows how to make this unique and interesting from the very start what with including those tiny computer beeps in amongst chaotic mayhem, sudden melodic vocal harmonies, and a splendid, romantic guitar solo. The album, which is based on a concept revolving around the meeting and history of two broken individuals, of course holds many different atmospheres as it has to illustrate different frames of minds. "In The Flesh" starts with the softer side of it all with a repetitive guitar backing nice melodic vocals. But then the rhythm gets fiercer and Daniel's voice starts heading towards vintage Robert Plant. Acoustic guitar melts together with piano to create a blood-curdling end. Next up is "Ashes," a strong song which has Pearl Jam, Faith No More and King's X elements all knitted into one. Certain parts of the song are rather "naked" but in the chorus there's a wall of sound coming down on you so you better beware! A video has been shot for "Ashes," a video that will be available on the limited edition of the album.

To me the first big surprise comes in the form of "Morning On Earth." It's really difficult to explain just why as you really have to hear this track (preferably with headphones) and all the little details which come creeping in. The drums have no snare, there's an almost operatic approach, theatrical in every way introducing jazzy guitar, acoustic guitar and an out of this world string section. This track will surely make your flesh creep! "Idioglossia" is once again "full speed ahead" with chopping guitars and throbbing basslines all the way. What's nice is the texture of Daniel's voice, which adopts itself to the kind of atmosphere the songs evoke. This guy can sing loud and I mean really LOUD but then again he can approach the melody from a fragile angle as well, such as in "Her Voices," where he sometimes gets in the region of R&B nicely blending with piano and reminding us of Faith No More. The song introduces ethnic influences, a hypnotizing rhythm even violin and once again an outstanding performance by drummer Johan Langell. Towards the end more voices get together but I would have loved to hear a huge choir here adding to the bombastic nature of the finale. Acoustic finesse in Extreme vein is the reference for "Dedication." Again it's all systems go for "King Of Loss" which has the guitars as absolute Olympic champions ending together with classical strings in total chaos.

It has to be said that the twelve songs on this disc are kind of grouped into three seperate packages of four songs each so we have come to the latest batch. "Reconciliation" has both guitars complementing each other whilst the vocals follow the piano guideline resulting in a progressive Skunk Anansie. A guitar almost sounding like a clavinet is the main attraction in the intro for "Song For The Innocent" before distortion sets in, introducing the bombastic nature of the Pain of Salvation music. Sadly the grand piano sounds too much in the background. "Falling" is a small showcase for the guitar skills. The album closes with "The Perfect Element," which once again is backed by an orchestral arrangement that forms the backdrop to heavy riffs. Acoustic guitar soon drowns in a sea of strings whilst the song builds and builds, layer upon layer so as to let the heavy guitar riffs into the arena once again. Acoustic guitars introduce violin, female vocals (I would have loved to hear Within Temptation's Sharon den Adel here!) and some inventive little details lead the way for all the various voices to meet in one central point. The song ends with some ace percussion as if it was an outtake from the musical Stomp. Breathtaking!

TWISTED ANGEL shows just how far the newly adult vocalist has come from her teenage-prodigy beginnings. For one thing, she seems determined to leave her country roots far behind. Though she started down the pop route as early as 1997's YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE, TWISTED ANGEL is completely devoid of any country inflection whatsoever, focusing instead (as have a couple of Rimes's previous efforts, to varying degrees) on modern, often even danceable, pop. Rimes may be closer to Britney Spears than to Kitty Wells these days, but she seems to be expressing more of her inner self. It's surely no coincidence that three of the four songs on which she gets co-writing credit utilize the imagery of the angel with dirty wings, the child star with tears behind the smile. Lyrically, Rimes is clearly exploring the conflicts and contradictions that her childhood fame brought her, which may or may not take her higher up the pop charts, but can only be a positive artistic step for a still-young singer.

This CD is a real gem. The great Afro-Cuban pianist Hilario Duran is joined by Jane Bunnett (on flute and soprano), trumpeter Larry Cramer, a string quartet, bassist Roberto Occhipinti, drummer Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez, and Rodolfo Valdes Terry on congs. In addition to the originals, it is particularly intriguing hearing such unlikely material as Billy Strayhorn's "U.M.M.G.," the beautiful "Autumn Nocturne," "Like Someone in Love," and "Harlem Nocturne" turned into stirring Latin music. The solos are consistently exciting and the ensembles are difficult to resist, making this Duran's strongest solo date yet.

Apocalypse Now is widely considered director Francis Ford Coppola's Waterloo, an ambitious personal vision that nearly wrecked his fabled career, health, and sanity. In fact, it was the director's equally Quixotic 1982 Vegas-themed musical One From the Heart that forever cast a pall over his Hollywood future, sounding a death knell for his once-promising American Zoetrope studios in the bargain. Hindsight being 20/20, it's now easy to see Heart's visual conceits as the glorious cinematic antecedent to Moulin Rouge, its smart, lounge-savvy score by musical odd couple Tom Waits and Crystal Gayle easily 15+ years ahead of the retro-hipster revival it preceded--and outclassed at every turn. Now brightened by a sparkling digital remastering, it remains the most accessibly mainstream--and ironically idiosyncratic--music of Waits' storied career. Constructed as a dialog between lovers in a fitful emotional spiral, Waits raspy growl is the perfect counterpoint to Gayle's own gutsy, surprisingly bluesy diva turns. Backed by the spare, deftly lugubrious production of Bones Howe and key contributions by jazz vets Greg Cohen on bass, saxist Teddy Edwards, and the key, mournfully lyrical trumpet of Jack Sheldon, Waits' score has long since taken its rightful place as a modern classic, a perfectly realized romantic daydream that never forgets the wistful, broken hearts stacking up beneath the Vegas neon. This edition features the previously unreleased Waits vocal outtake, "Candy Apple Red" as well as an early, discarded version of the opening montage "Once Upon A Town/Empty Pockets," rejects that only underscore the strength of Waits' musical hand. Enhanced CD also features a newly-edited video montage by Coppola's son, Gian-Carlo.

One of Abou-Khalil's earlier albums, Between Dusk and Dawn features stellar sidemen such as master percussionist Glen Velez and jazz saxophonist Charlie Mariano. In places it exhibits that ecstatic melding of jazz and Arabic music that was later perfected on Blue Camel. But in other places it gives us long patches of noodling and less-then-engaging playfulness.

An example of the former would be the first track, "Dusk." At just over 14 minutes, more than half of this piece is devoted to a shapeless and tiresome prelude for percussion and oud (Arabic lute). An example of the latter is the aptly named "The Thing that Came out of the Swamp," which features everything but the kitchen sink, including Glen Velez's overtone singing, in a fantasy that sounds like Stravinsky crossed with Steve Reich. Yet there are solid, jazzy tracks like "Chess with Mal" which opens with a long but well-formed solo by Charlie Mariano before sax and oud synchronize for one of Abou-Khalil's gloriously rhythmic tunes. Or "Dawn," where Abou-Khalil plays one of his favorite tricks of making it sound as if the melody of the piece grows out of his initial improvisation. Despite the album's lack of overall focus, it does offer a bounty for the ear, especially in the percussion. A disc for fans of one or more of the musicians involved. ~ Kurt Keefner, All Music Guide

If the fans who grooved to Believe still clamor for more, there's little doubt that Living Proof will quickly achieve the same chromatic status as Cher's new hair color. The multitalented entertainer is placing a safe bet on the fortitude of her latest incarnation as disco diva to support a second album of dance club tracks. Other pop femme fatales of late are experimenting with subtleties in rhythm and nuance, but subtlety is not one of Cher's selling points. She's been quoted as comparing "Song for the Lonely" to U2's sound; indeed, through Cher's discofied ears, there are brief moments where the track riffs on U2's euphoric "Beautiful Day" and the two songs share a hopeful sentiment. "Love So High" and "Body to Body, Heart to Heart" throw the prerequisite Latin guitar and percussion into the mix, and the buzzing back beats on her cover of "Love One Another" (last heard on Dutch singer Amber's self-titled release) make it one of the CD's tightest songs. Cher's vocals--a taste we've had more than 35 years to acquire--are strong, and her production team enhances her limited range with studio tricks. Living Proof will appeal more to Cher's devoted fans than electronica purists, but her missive is relished by both sects: leave your worries at the door and get out on the dance floor.

This is one the rare jewels coming from the limited prog art rock scene in Spain during 70's. They come from galicia (NW Spain) and they sing in Galician (sounds similar to portuguese). The disc was released in 1978 and was one of the first rock discs I heard in my youth. Because of this I cannot be impartial. They are very good musicians and they are widely unknown, even for google and many sites dedicated to prog music. It's a pity that the disc reedition in 2000 was so reduced that it's impossible to find the CD, so please don't blame for the MPC or the MP3@160 Kb/s because it was the only rip available in P2P. I've tried to purchase the disc with no success, but will continue trying in the future. meanwhile this is the best and only version I can provide. If you get a better version I'm the first one to be interested in, but I was quite glad to find at least this one!

Let's go with some comments and reviews from others and for those that prefer to hear a sample, here's the first song of the disc and the best one in my opinion. Hammond organ and guitar are simply outstanding...

1978 was Spain's boom year in terms of progressive rock music, and Grupo N.H.U. met the challenge head on. One of the finest from the Spanish progressive scene, Grupo N.H.U. contains everything that made the Spanish scene so special. Strong compositions marked by many changes. Fat keyboards, loud acid guitar, and a complex, exciting rhythm section make up the centerpiece of the group. An excellent vocalist and a strong fusion edge a la Mahavishu Orchestra rounds out one of the true bona fide classics of the Spanish scene. An absolute must hear.
One of the great tragedies however is that Grupo N.H.U., along with Atila's Reviure, missed out on the Spanish reissue trend of the last ten years. Only available as an original on the Novola label, expect to shell out some $$$ for this. At least it's a very nice gatefold cover! One of the greatest progressive albums still not on CD.
Good news: Grupo N.H.U.'s album has just been issued (under the moniker of just N.H.U.) on CD by parent label RCA.

N.H.U. - N.H.U (1978)

The eponymous album from Grupo N.H.U. seems to be one of the more acclaimed albums from the rich Spanish progressive scene, and I had been eagerly awaiting its debut on the CD format so that I might finally hear it. Initially, I was somewhat disappointed, but the album has proven to be something of a grower for me personally. For starters, the group's sound is sorta atypical. Yeah, its symphonic all right, but the band eschews many of the flamenco/folk rock tendencies of contemporaries like Mezquita, Triana and Cai. Instead, much of the music here is vaguely psychedelic, made up of swirling stabs of Hammond organ and reverb-laden guitar work. Watery and unassuming at first perhaps, but the subtle melodic phrasing works its way in over time. Opener "Na Terra do Verde Chan" is particularly potent. Beginning with the sound of raindrops, the band breaks in and settles into a lurching, gloriously distorted groove, over which sprinklings of piano melodies and the steady, pleasant vocal part rest comfortably. "A Titiritada" and closer "A Trancas e Barrancas" get as close as the album ever does to "rocking", thanks to a relatively intense Hammond jams on both. To be sure, almost nothing manages to jump out at the listener here, particularly on first impression. Early listens brought upon a feeling of complacency, boredom even, on the part of the players. But the band's purpose isn't to bop you over the head with how good they are, instead they place a heavy emphasis on atmosphere, gorgeous tones and the little things; like how nice this rich organ note sounds against this ecstatically fuzzed out guitar. The whole thing has this sweet, savory vibe that makes you want to crawl up inside the speaker to absorb it all. Does anybody remember this British singer from the 1960's?

Kathy Kirby (born October 20, 1940 with the name Kathleen O'Rourke) was a popular British singer of the 1960s. She was born in Ilford, Essex. Her phenomenal soprano voice became apparent early in life and she was thought to be good enough for opera. However she became a professional singer after meeting the bandleader, Ambrose at the Ilford Palais. She remained with Ambrose's band for three years and he remained her manager and mentor until his death in 1971. She adopted the look of a 'blonde bombshell', very like Marilyn Monroe. Her looks, lip-gloss and her powerful, pitch-perfect voice became her trademarks. She had a string of Top 20 hits between 1963 and 1965, the best known of which is probably Secret Love. A later hit 'You're the One' is a particularly good demonstration of her remarkable breath control. Kathy became one of the biggest stars of the mid-sixties, appearing in the Royal Command Variety Performance and two television series for the BBC. She represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1965 and came second with the song 'I Belong'. Kathy Kirby's star faded in the late sixties: although she recorded 12 singles and an album between 1967 and 1973, none were hits. Ambrose's death was devastating for her. She had some personal problems in the 1970s including personal bankruptcy in 1977, which she paid off. During the late seventies, Kathy Kirby virtually retired from show business. She currently resides in London.
